Dr. Julia Brumaghim

Professor, Clemson University

Dr. Brumaghim earned her PhD in Chemistry with Dr. Greg Girolami at the University of Illinois, Urbana and completed post-doctoral work with Drs. Ken Raymond (Chemistry) and Stuart Linn (Molecular and Cellular Biology) at the University of California, Berkeley. At Clemson University, Dr. Brumaghim has examined the ability of antioxidants to prevent metal-mediated oxidative damage, damage that leads to cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and neurodegenerative diseases. Due to the lack of readily deployable tools to study such damage and a lack of understanding about cellular metal-based processes, metal-mediated oxidative DNA damage is often overlooked. Dr. Brumaghim develops tools to quantify antioxidant prevention of metal-mediated DNA damage and has demonstrated the first structure-activity relationships for a variety of antioxidant classes. She also explores mechanisms of nanoparticle toxicity, radical-induced radiation damage, and antifungal drug resistance development.
