Student perceptions on a ChatGPT-enabled final exam | Poster Board #124

Date
August 18, 2024

ChatGPT is a tool that can be leveraged to enhance student learning. In a general chemistry course for non-majors, students were given a ChatGPT-enabled final exam. Before the final exam, students wrote a paper that incorporated science and sustainability with a topic (of their choice) within the confines of water and carbon footprint. During the final exam, students were asked to compare the writing and science and chemistry content of the paper they wrote earlier in the semester to that of a paper written by ChatGPT. Through a coding process, significant themes about the “robot-like” tone of ChatGPTs paper and the student’s perspective on locally sustainable practices emerged. Additionally, students answered a bonus question about their views on the assignment as a final exam, revealing praise for the comparative activity and an awareness of how AI will impact their futures.
