Urea is an important chemical for agriculture, air pollution control, and transportation. Currently, the synthesis of urea uses a great amount of energy in its industrial production. Humans naturally produce urea, and it goes to waste through urine. In an effort to not only remove urea from wastewater, but also reuse urea rather than synthesize it, we use reduced graphene oxide-molybdenum disulfide (RGO-MoS2) composite filtration membranes to block other components
of urine but allow smaller sized urea to permeate through. RGO-MoS2 composites are synthesized by a hydrothermal reaction. The composite membranes are then prepared using a pressure cell. The filtration tests using ersatz urine are conducted in the pressure cell. The filtrate volume overtime is monitored and recorded to determine the filtration flow rate. The UV-visible and IR spectral changes before and after filtration are measured to determine the rejection rate of other components in ersatz urine and the urea permeation rate.
