Recent advances in the optical models used to interpret experimental second harmonic and vibrational sum frequency spectroscopic data now allow for a quantitative determination of the total electric fields and Stern layer structure at charged interfaces. This talk will present the new techniques and discuss their application to determine the total interfacial potential and water flipping as common oxides (SiO2, Fe2O3, NiOx) are subjected to varying conditions of pH and ionic strength, as well as different cations (alkalis, alkaline earths, trivalents). Implications for improving mean field and primitive ion models are presented.
