Hydrazine complexes of c-type cytochromes

Hydrazine (N2H4), a toxic rocket propellant, has recently been shown to be a key player in the global biogeochemical nitrogen cycle. Specifically, hydrazine is an intermediate in the anammox metabolic pathway which converts ammonia and nitrite to dinitrogen, accounting for ~50% of all nitrogen removal from the ocean. Hydrazine metabolism is catalyzed by large multi-subunit heme containing enzymes (hydrazine synthase, hydrazine dehydrogenase). In order to shed light on the interaction of hydrazine with the heme iron, we have characterized kinetic and spectroscopic properties of hydrazine bound to c-type cytochromes that contain only a single type of heme site.
