David M Wirth is a current PhD candidate at UCSD focused on the nano-scale engineering of materials. Before beginning his doctoral studies, he served as a commissioned officer in the Air Force, founded the venture-backed startup Fabric8Labs, and worked on the demo team for the Discovery channel. A number of his personal and professional projects have been featured by New Scientist, Popular Mechanics, and Popular Science. In 2016 he was personally invited to the White House to discuss his work on room temperature metal 3D printing. In 2018 he was listed on Forbes' 30 under 30 in the area of manufacturing. His research on nanoscale and polymer materials engineering has been featured in Nature Nanotechnology and ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces, among others. He holds a masters and bachelors degree in Aerospace Engineering from UCLA and holds 5 patents chiefly in the field of additive manufacturing.
