Recent advancements in 3D printing technologies offer a promising manufacturing strategy by minimizing waste production, conserving energy, and enabling the creation of vast and intricate structures. Nowadays, there has been a growing focus on exploring the utilization of lignocellulosic biomass in 3D printing to address the limitations associated with petroleum-based materials including resource scarcity and negative impacts on the environment. Biomass and its components like cellulose and lignin have been utilized in various 3D printing technologies. However, the utilization of biomass and its derivates in 3D printing applications is still in the early stage, and only a few biomass feedstocks have been considered.
In our studies, we utilized different biomass, biomass components, and industrial waste for value-added 3D printing applications and studied the effect of different biomass components on the performance of biocomposites. The effect of biomass species and extractives contents, biomass component, and ash content on the performance of biocomposites were investigated comprehensively. In addition, industrial waste - hemp waste and paper waste used as filler for 3D printed parts manufacturing were successfully fabricated.
