Spatiotemporal control of Chemistry in living systems

Date
August 19, 2025

Over the last several decades, several bioconjugation reactions have been developed that can be routinely performed within living cells and organisms. However, controlling when and where these reactions occur still presents a formidable challenge and is needed to unlock future aspirational applications. Our lab has been developing several new methods for triggering chemical reactions within living cells. In one avenue, we have developed responsive bioorthogonal reactions that occur only if light or enzymatic stimuli are present. I will also discuss new ways in which we are generating or reacting with bioactive lipids, so that we can better understand the functions of lipids or their degradation products. Finally we are also exploiting enzymatic reactions to improve our ability to image or deliver nucleic acids.
