Research fronts in chemistry

Date
August 20, 2025

Research Fronts has been published annually by the Chinese Academy of Sciences since 2014. The reports in this series are based on Clarivate's Essential Science Indicators (ESI) database, which employs the co-citation method to identify research fronts. The ESI database updates the list of research fronts six times a year. Each annual report utilizes the second edition published in March and focuses exclusively on hot and emerging research fronts, which constitute nearly 1% of all research fronts in a given edition. Between 2014 and 2024, the Research Fronts series has recognized 236 research fronts in the field of chemistry. Nearly every major area of chemistry is represented, including synthesis, catalysis, surfaces and interfaces, theory and mechanisms, measurement and instrumentation, materials chemistry, environmental chemical science, chemical biology, chemical engineering, and energy chemistry. More significantly, these research fronts address topics related to nine of the 11 Nobel Prizes in chemistry awarded from 2014 to 2024 and have predicted eight of them. In conclusion, the co-citation and analysis methods employed by Research Fronts effectively identify significant and emerging research topics in chemistry.
