Method development and validation of ACS grade reagents | Poster Board #608

Date
March 26, 2023

The ACS Committee on Analytical Reagents (CAR) created the University Taskforce for the purpose of outreaching universities and minority-serving institutions, involving students in the development and validation of ACS-grade chemicals, and expanding the committee's analytical capabilities. We developed a method for spectrophotometric analysis of 2,4 dinitrophenylhydrazine (2,4-DNPH) and analyzed and established the specifications for 2-(N-morpholino)ethanesulfonic acid (MES) and 2-(N-morpholino)ethanesulfonic sodium (MES-Na). The 2,4-DNPH assay was based on the reaction between the hydrazine and acetaldehyde in methanol or acetonitrile. The resulting derivative was analyzed by absorption spectroscopy and the amount of 2,4-DNPH in the commercial sample was calculated. The MES and MES-Na assays were performed using titrimetric procedures.
The results were presented to the CAR Validation Committee for approval and will be included in the Reagent Chemicals publication of ACS.
