Chemistry of paint: Interdisciplinary lessons and experiments for undergraduate and high school students
Date
March 26, 2025
A chemical education research project studied how art could be incorporated into a laboratory environment with the goal of engaging more students through interdisciplinary lessons. Students can first learn about safety of chemicals through discussing paint pigments that have found to be harmful over time. Nomenclature of chemicals can be incorporated with students synthesizing paint pigments in the laboratory safely. Students use their syntheses to understand balancing chemical reactions. Solubility can be observed by dissolving the synthesized paint pigments into different mediums, and finally, students can make their own paint. In this research, the medium of paint was used to create several laboratory experiences that can be used individually or as modules in a larger unit to teach chemistry in a fun and engaging manner.
Benzene is known to undergo photocycloadditions in an _ortho_, _meta_, and _para_ fashion, with _meta_-cycloadditions being the most recognized. Pyridones are well known for their proclivity for [4+4] photocycloadditions with 1,3-dienes or their equivalents…
Promysalin is a natural product produced by _Pseudomonas putida_ that selectively inhibits growth of the Gram-negative ESKAPE pathogen, _Pseudomonas aeruginosa_. Our group completed the first total synthesis, in 8 longest linear steps and an overall yield of 35%…
Pyridones exhibit strong reactivity for [4+4] photocycloadditions and in a mixed pyridone-benzene system, a _para-_ photocycloaddition is highly favored…
A 200-level, 1-credit chemistry seminar course was developed and is taught at Wilkes University entitled Underrepresentation in Science. The course is divided into four modules of gender, race, disability, and moving forward…
