Perfect Practice Makes Perfect is the foundation of the Chem21Labs approach. For improvement and mastery in chemistry (or any field), activities must be assigned, monitored, and evaluated. "You must inspect what you expect" Paul J. Meyer – Founder of the Personal Development Industry. At the most basic level, teachers guide the novice along a path that leads to expert-level knowledge and abilities. This process is most efficient when the novice is actively engaged, receives immediate feedback and experiences "success" with every step. Active engagement is the key element in our credit-earning flash card program for students. Once students possess the knowledge of the flash cards, we add more engagement by embedding HTML5-JS interactives in our online textbook, virtual labs, and tutorials. Chem21Labs started in 2005 with the goal of adding immediate feedback to the lab submission process. We replace single-submission, hand-graded, paper reports with a paperless 21st Century approach that improves student learning through immediate feedback and multiple attempts while producing consistent grading for all students - "grade smarter, not harder." The effect that immediate feedback had on the lab submission process compelled us to look for ways to include it in every part of the learning process. Finally, we discovered that students learn more when they are actively engaged, receive immediate feedback on their progress, and experience "success" regularly. The Chem21Labs approach is to provide students with small steps of engaging work that they can successfully accomplish. Through gradual progress, the student will achieve significant academic advancement.
