In the pursuit of safe, efficient, and sustainable energy storage technologies, the design of battery chemistries at the nanoscale, particularly those utilizing one- and two- dimensional nanomaterials, has emerged as a promising solution. Over the past decade, significant advancements in battery chemistry have been enabled by the integration of those low-dimensional nanomaterials, including nanostructure or nanolayer designs at solid-electrolyte and cathode-electrolyte interfaces (SEI/CEI), 2D materials such as graphene, MXene, and TMDs, as well as nano to micrometer-thick coatings and thin-film solid electrolyte. However, scientific challenges persist, including imperfect battery materials, interfacial instability, unclear failure mechanisms, and issues related to processing cost and scalability. In response, this symposium will bring together world-leading experts from academia and industry to explore solutions to these hurdles in three key areas: 1). Design and development of novel low-dimensional battery chemistries and architectures, including interlayer design at electrolyte/electrode interface, coating strategy on cathode materials, thin-film materials, etc. 2). Understanding fundamental mechanisms of the low-dimensional system leveraging advanced characterization techniques such as electron microscopy, X-ray, neutron, mass spectroscopy, and scanning probe methods. 3). Advancing low-dimensional material fabrication with sustainable and energy efficient manufacturing processes. By bringing together leading experts, this symposium provides an exciting platform for collaboration and knowledge exchange. Together, we aim to drive forward the development of low-dimensional battery chemistries and support the global transition to clean energy.
