I am a Ph.D. student at NYU School of Medicine. I am pursing extensive research in field of Environmental Chemistry in Dr. Kannan's lab. My research interest is focused on Monitoring of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in Biological and Environmental Samples for Human Exposure Assessment. VOCs is a fraction of air pollution that is highly toxic but is often overlooked. VOCs are high production volume chemicals and exposure to them is ubiquitous in the environment. Examples include Benzene (known carcinogen), Toluene, Styrene. They evaporate at ambient temperatures. There exposure sources include motor vehicle smoke, biomass burning, industrial processes, cigarette smoking, paints, office supplies and home supplies. I measure metabolites (VOCMs) in urine samples using LC-MS/MS to assess VOCs exposure in humans. My work also includes characterizing VOCs in day to day consumer products using GC-MS techniques. Future impact includes setting population based VOCs exposure reference ranges.
