Dr Vincenzo Abbate
Reader in Bioanalysis, King's College London
I am a Reader in Bioanalysis within the Department of Analytical, Environmental and Forensic Sciences at King's College London (KCL). I completed my Pharm. D. in 2004 (110/110 cum laude) at Federico II University of Naples (Italy). I then moved to the UK to undertake a PhD in Chemistry and Analytical Sciences at The Open University. In 2008 I was awarded a prestigious Maplethorpe Fellowship of the University of London for the promotion of teaching and research in the pharmaceutical area. Following postdoctoral work with Professor Robert Hider, I was appointed as Senior Scientist (and later as Head of R&D) in the Drug Control Centre at KCL. In 2017, I obtained my first Academic Appointment as Lecturer in Pharmaceutical Sciences, followed by a permanent, full-time Lectureship in Analytical Toxicology in 2018. In 2019, I was promoted to Senior Lecturer in Analytical Toxicology, followed by a promotion to Reader in Bioanalysis in 2022.
I currently lead a vibrant research group composed of 2 post docs and 9 PhD students. My research is multidisciplinary and of a collaborative nature and lies primarily in the area of bioanalysis (identification and quantification of substances/biomarkers in biological samples), underpinned by my expertise in analytical science & synthetic chemistry. My research has been supported by funding from UKRI, the European Commission, industries, non-profit organisations, and overseas Government Studentships (combined funding ca. £1.1M as PI)
