Green hydrogen has gained worldwide attention as it can become a strong enabler for global decarbonation and climate control. It can be used for oil upgrading, fertilizer synthesis, metal/steel production, synthetic fuels, transportation, etc. Green hydrogen can be produced via water electrolysis using water and renewable electricity, thus significantly reducing the carbon footprint from conventional hydrogen production process-methane reforming. According to the estimate from IRENA, the need for water electrolyzers will reach 5000 GW to contain global temperature increase below 1.5 oC by 2050. Meanwhile, there have been grand challenges for green hydrogen production and adaptation, including high CapEx and OpEx cost for electrolyzer system, coupling with renewables, storage and transport, vertical integration with existing industries. Therefore, this symposium aims to pinpoint these grand challenges by providing critical perspectives from the industries and stakeholders. The interested topics may include but are not limited to the following categories: 1) advances of water electrolysis technologies; 2) water electrolyzer manufacturing and gigafactory; 3) techno-economics of water electrolyzers; 4) integration between renewable energy and water electrolyzers; 5) green hydrogen storage and transport.; 6) adaption of and application of green hydrogen from multiple industries; 7) hydrogen safety and public acceptance; 8) Initiatives from recent DOE’s regional H2 hubs.
