The behavior of gas- and liquid-phase catalytic reactions within porous oxide materials reflect contributions from a range of active site types and geometries, most of which are not known a priori and which likely undergo reconfiguration during catalysis. This complex array of sites can catalyze multiple reaction pathways, both simultaneous and sequential, which complicates analysis of reaction products. Understanding how these combinations of sites control catalysis and adsorption requires combinations of experimental and computational tools. This symposium welcomes discussions of state-of-the-art experimental and theoretical methods that elucidate these phenomena over bulk oxides and apply them to improve catalytic performance.
