He has 24 yrs of research experience. In the industry, he coordinated pre-clinical studies and launched 4 products. He participated in scale-up, building commercial-scale bioreactors and downstream facilities, and DMF submission to FDA. At Prather and Voigt labs (MIT), he had built expertise in SynBio. His research focus (since 2012; 15 grants; $7.3M external funding to him; $16M total) is to understand and engineer gene regulation, evolution, and metabolism. He has published 55 papers, filed 9 patents, and given 49 invited and 111 contributed presentations. He has advised 26 PhD/Postdocs and 28 undergrad researchers. Awards include a Daniel Wang Award, CAREER, ONR YIP, MIT Sluder Fellowship, ILJU Award, LG Fellowship, and SNU President Prize. He serves as an MIT Counselor, SNU evaluator, Editorial Member of multiple journals, Organizing Committee of SEED22 and ME15, and EBRC Council Member. He is the Chair of SynBYSS, a weekly multi-year seminar series with >1000 global audiences.
