This symposium will bring together faculty and industry partners who incorporate the use and/or development of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in carrying out research or research training with undergraduate students. The emergence of accessible AI software and other applications over the past few years is generating a broad array of exciting opportunities in Chemistry/Biochemistry research. Specifically considering the high-impact practice of engaging undergraduate students in research, the ongoing advancement of AI offers many interesting opportunities and some significant challenges. From the general use of programs like ChatGPT in the exploration of research context or execution of effective writing, to engaging with more targeted programs such as AlphaFold to enhance specific research ideas, undergraduate researchers (and their mentors) have unprecedented access to AI tools. Bringing together a broad range of multidisciplinary perspectives and expertise in the chemical sciences, this symposium will explore some of the ongoing challenges and opportunities to engaging with AI in carrying out undergraduate-based research and research training. Presentations in this session will offer tangible examples of the diversity and impact of AI in undergraduate research. Presenters will also be asked to discuss the practical aspects staying "up to date" and onboarding students to AI in their research programs.
