Dr. Sanders Johnson is a synthetic organic chemist at Spelman College, a small liberal arts HBCU for women located in Atlanta. Dr. Sanders Johnson's research focuses on the synthesis of novel heterocycles from nitrocyclopropanes and also on methods of inclusive teaching. The work presented at this conference will focus on the incorporation of non-traditional assessment strategies in the organic chemistry lecture, and the inclusion of culturally relevant pedagogy in the organic chemistry laboratory. Both methods are geared at making the courses more engaging and more inclusive to the Black women enrolled in the courses. With widespread use, teaching strategies such as these can ultimately lead to more diversity and inclusion in chemistry.
