Professor Niwayama received her Ph. D. from the University of Tokyo, Japan, in synthetic organic chemistry. After postdoctoral appointments at the Ohio State University, at the University of California, Los Angeles, and at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, she became Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry, Oklahoma State University, an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Texas Tech University, USA. She moved to Muroran Institute of Technology, Japan, as Professor in 2014. Since 2017 she has been serving as Head of the Chemical and Biological Engineering Unit there. Her research programs pertain to development of synthetic methodologies and bioorganic chemistry using organic molecule for solving biological problems. Her research has been recognized with several awards such as the Southwest Region ACS Award, ACS/PROGRESS Dreyfus lectureship Award, NSF-CAREER Award, Japanese Society for Process Chemistry Award for Excellence, etc.
