A primary challenge in the development and optimization of heterogeneous catalysts is to bridge the divide between surface chemistry and catalyst performance. The ultimate aim is to connect knowledge of the active sites and the elementary reaction steps on surfaces to the macroscopic catalyst performance under reaction conditions. Realization of such goals will require surface science characterization that can be translated to the more complex environment (e.g. high pressure, liquid phase) and dynamics (e.g. structure changes, complex network of reactions) that occur under reaction conditions. This connection between fundamental surface science studies and catalysis is important in all heterogenous catalysis applications, including electrochemical and photocatalytic processes.
