Colloidal nanocrystals are useful components for the assembly of complex materials, as their properties and assembly behavior can be readily tuned as a function of their composition, sizes, shapes, and ligand coatings. However, while the ability to invent new material building blocks affords significant versatility in materials design, it also requires the development of new principles to identify and explain correlations between their synthesis, structures, and properties. Critically, these investigations include both the “synthesis of” new colloidal nanoparticles (e.g. methods to manipulate all aspects of nanoparticle composition and structure), and “synthesis with” these new material components (e.g. novel bonding and assembly strategies to build hierarchical materials). This symposium will focus on recent developments and future directions for colloidal nanomaterials synthesis, including both “synthesis of” new colloidal components for materials, and “synthesis with” these tailorable building blocks. Key directions for the production, assembly, characterization, structure-property relationships, and fabrication of nanoparticles and nanoparticle-based materials and devices will be emphasized to guide the future development of the field.
