There is a growing concern regarding environmental and human health impacts from plastic waste. Plastics from consumer products, clothing fibers, and tire rubber degrade to microplastics (< 5 mm) and nanoplastics (< 1 um) in air, water, and soil. There are critical gaps in microplastic research primarily regarding source identification, health risks, and environmental remediation. These gaps are more significant when considering the nanoplastic size range. All topics related to micro and nanoplastics in the environment will be considered, including: analytical characterization, ecological toxicity, fate and transport, and remediation options. The topics that will be covered in this session include, but are not limited to: 1. New methods for detection, quantification, characterization of micro/nanoplastics; 2 Models for indoor air transport, water transport, and degradation of micro/nanoplastics; 3. Production of micro/nanoplastic reference materials; 4. Novel methods to mitigate plastics in the environment, to upcycle plastic waste, and studies on circular economy.
