Carbon nanoparticle quantum dots are often used across various fields of research because of their significant advantages in luminescence properties, high water solubility, fluorescence, and chemical affinity. The goal of this study was to understand the surface chemical properties of carbon dots, such as atomic concentration, binding energy, and chemical composition. Various sizes of carbon dots were simultaneously synthesized by exposing a ratio of ammonium citric acid and ethylenediamine to microwave irradiation. The brightness and color of carbon dots when exposed to black light differed, which depended on the characteristics of carbon nanoparticles that had been subject to microcentrifugation across 7 sizes. This led to the conclusion that chemical structure and properties of nanoscale carbon dots were size-dependent. With the understanding of various carbon dots, they were applied for (1) analyzing copper ions with good selectivity, (2) monitoring glucose using nanozyme essay, (3) performing a chemiluminescence immunoassay with high sensitivity for the quantification of a tumor marker, and (4) imaging specimen samples varied using a transition electron microscope with fluorescence detection.
