Metals dispersed on metal oxide supports, including single atoms, are ubiquitous in heterogeneous catalysis. Catalyst degradation with time on stream is often neglected in fundamental research. However, a better understanding of degradation mechanisms, especially in the long-term, is needed to translate novel catalysts to industry. Furthermore, catalysis will play a central role in societys transition from fossil resources to alternative feedstocks and waste plastics, which necessitates new approaches to handle the concentrated catalyst poisons which pervade these raw materials. This symposium will explore efforts to combine theory, in situ/operando characterization, and machine learning to understand and mitigate catalyst changes that result in deactivation or shifts in selectivity.
