Organic chemistry has been shown to be a challenging course for undergraduate students, with previous literature focusing on high failure rates in the course, as well as cognitive understanding of organic chemistry content and misconceptions that inhibit students’ learning. The affective domain has been shown to play an important role in student learning within the general chemistry classroom. However, a notable gap exists in the literature focusing on the investigation of the affective domain within the organic chemistry classroom. This mixed-methods research study aims to explore how undergraduate students feel about learning organic chemistry and the origins of these attitudes. The Attitudes Towards Organic Chemistry (ATOC) survey was developed as a tool to measure undergraduate students’ attitudes towards the learning of organic chemistry. Preliminary findings regarding data generated from the ATOC will be presented.
