CO2 can serve as a feedstock to produce fuels and high-value products, which provides a substantial benefit for carbon management to address climate change and environmental sustainability. Recent advancement in CO2 electroreduction has enabled the production of various intermediates and commodity chemicals. This symposium aims to introduce the latest CO2 reduction progress to enable integration with biological systems for converting waste gases into higher value products. The Techno-Economic and Life-Cycle implications will also be discussed. This session covers broad scopes in CO2 conversion and will include but not limited to the following aspects: 1) Integrating of electrochemically derived carbon intermediates (i.e. syngas, formate, hydrogen) with microbial fermentation for upgrading into fuels and chemicals. 2) CO2 to biotic methane generation in microbial methanogenesis cells to harness the energy for electricity. 3) Novel designs of Chem-bio interface enabling the biological and biochemical conversion of CO2 derivatives into bioplastics and molecules of life such as sugar and proteins. 4) Coupling of artificial photosynthesis, CO2 electrolysis and microbial fermentation to produce higher alcohols; 5) CO2 derived substrates to sustain edible photosynthetic organisms’ growth for food production.
