Dr Martin A Schoonen

Associate Laboratory Director, Brookhaven National Laboratory

Martin Schoonen oversees the Environmental and Climate Sciences Department, Biology Department, Nonproliferation and National Security Department, and the Nuclear Sciences and Technology Department at Brookhaven National Laboratory.  He received his Ph.D. in Geochemistry and Mineralogy from Penn State and is on leave from Stony Brook University where he was Professor in the Geosciences Department for more than 25 years. Schoonen's research areas include environmental molecular chemistry, geocatalysis, medical geology, and astrobiology.  Most of his work has focused on understanding the reactivity of pyrite in a wide range of environments.  He was Chair of the ACS-Geochemistry Division in 2007.
