Māris Turks was born and raised in Latvia. In 2005, he earned his Dr.ès.sc. degree in synthetic organic chemistry from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne under the guidance of Professor Pierre Vogel. Then, he spent one year as SNSF Postdoctoral Fellow at Stanford University under the guidance of Professor Barry M. Trost. In 2007, he accepted an academic position at Riga Technical University (RTU), Latvia, where he is currently Full Professor and Head of the Institute of Technology of Organic Chemistry. Since 2018, Professor Turks is also Dean of the Faculty of Materials Science and Applied Chemistry, RTU. Since 2015, M.Turks serves as associate editor of SCI journal "Chemistry of Heterocyclic Compounds". Dr. Turks' research interests deal with carbohydrate and nucleoside chemistry, functionalized heterocycles, organosilicon compounds, natural triterpenoids and applications of liquid sulfur dioxide in organic synthesis.
