Reactive carbon capture (RCC) is a process where, in a single unit operation, CO2 is captured and reacted to form high-value products. The materials at the heart of reactive capture, here referred to as adsorbent-catalysts (also known as dual-function materials), are responsible for the fate of the captured CO2. In the past several years, this nascent field has enabled reaction pathways, adsorbent-catalyst materials, reactor designs, and process conditions that could shift the currently unfavorable economics of direct air capture. In this symposium we aim to gather recent developments that enable RCC. Encouraged topics include (but are not limited to): 1) Adsorbent-catalyst design, characterization, and mechanistic studies; 2) Chemical pathways reaching beyond C1 products; 3) Novel energy transfer and process schemes; 4) Evaluation of steady-state vs. capture-convert operating modes; 5) Switchable adsorbent-catalysts.
