Session: Successful Student Chapters:

University teaching laboratories serve as the introduction to the STEM professional field for many students. In these teaching laboratories, particularly chemistry teaching laboratories, students not only learn new techniques and science but also the proper method to write a laboratory report. Detailed laboratory reports include the purpose of the lab experiment, observations made, data collected, calculations, and a discussion/conclusions drawn from said experiment based on evidence. For the last three years, the FIU-Biscayne Bay Campus Student Chapter has hosted General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry Laboratory Workshops during the first few weeks of the semester to aid students in their introduction to scientific writing. In these workshops, we discuss how to make a good laboratory report, how to use evidence collected from data and observations to draw conclusions and give explanations, the importance of safety techniques, and give in-coming students general tips and resources that can aid them with their lab experience such as RefWorks and using the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics. Student impact from these workshops was determined by gathering survey responses directly following the laboratory workshop, direct feedback from the students and statistics gathered.
