A deep understanding of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) chemistry is crucial for interpreting their behavior in humans and animals, assessing various environmental exposure pathways, and developing effective mitigation and remediation measures to minimize health impacts. This symposium will cover recent advanced analytical and computational methods to characterize PFAS, toxicological effects, innovative concentration (e.g., adsorption, ion exchange, and other enrichment technologies), and destruction (e.g., physical, chemical, and thermal treatment) techniques. This symposium will place a special emphasis on the deep understanding of underlying PFAS chemistry and examine how this chemistry dictates the sorption and distribution of PFAS in air, water, near and sub-surface regions, humans, and fish. This knowledge will also guide technological advancement in the design and application of new PFAS sensors, sorbents, and destructive technologies.
