Dr. Joseph P. Smith is currently an associate principal scientist in the Analytical Research & Development Department at Merck. He earned his B.S. in Chemistry from the Pennsylvania State University and his Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Delaware. Dr. Smith's research centers around developing and applying novel analytical technology using machine learning, spectroscopy, and hyperspectral imaging to enhance development of diverse pharmaceuticals. Dr. Smith currently leads a group at Merck devoted to impacting pharmaceutical development using PAT and other data-rich technology. Dr. Smith has published over 30 peer-reviewed manuscripts, has mentored a Merck Postdoctoral Research Fellow, and serves as principal investigator on academic (University of Delaware, Purdue University) and industrial (NIIMBL) collaborations. Dr. Smith has recently received several prestigious awards, including the Bruce R. Kowalski Award and the Glenn S. Skinner Memorial Award.
