Prof. Furgal attended the University of Detroit Mercy (UDM) where he received a B.S. in Chemistry and a minor in Applied Mathematics in 2010. At UDM he was actively involved in the chemistry club (president) and also excelled at undergraduate research on alkyne coupling reactions in Prof. Matthew Mio's laboratory. He then went on to the University of Michigan (UM) where he pursued a PhD. in Materials Chemistry under the direction of Theodore Goodson III and Richard Laine focusing on the structure-property relationships of silsesquioxane based electronic materials, finishing in 2015. After his PhD. Prof. Furgal took a post-doctoral research position in chemical engineering at UM where he focused on the directed self-assembly and disassembly of covalent bonds in peptoids under the direction of Timothy Scott. In fall 2017 Prof. Furgal started his independent career as an Assistant Professor in the Chemistry and Photochemical Sciences Department at Bowling Green State University where he teaches organic chemistry courses and conducts research in hybrid silicon-organic photo-active materials.
