The world is moving towards a net zero emission goal. Sustainable energy options come with a steep increase in demand for rare earth elements (REEs) such as Ny, Pr, Dy, Sm, etc., critical elements such as Li, Co, Mn, Graphite, Ni, and V for magnetic and battery applications for stationary power, and other metals in industrial and transportation sectors. Obtaining these minerals from secondary sources, including byproducts of coal mining and other energy-based waste products and recycled batteries, is vital to meet the future demand for these elements. This symposium encourages researchers working on novel environmentally friendly processes and greener chemistries to recover critical minerals from chemically complex feedstock through experimental, theoretical, computational, or combined approaches highlighting statistical methods, machine learning, and data science to expedite time to solution for enhanced critical mineral recovery. We encourage papers relating to Chemistry of secondary resources, recycling of CMs from batteries The pre-concentration of primary/secondary resources using physical processes Selective extraction of elements/minerals either individually or in selected groups using polymeric resins, ionic liquids, biological or electrochemical methods Multi-scale extraction models: Experimental and/or computational models enabling atomistic, mesoscale, and/or systems-level understanding of extraction processes Data-driven optimization: Computational approaches focused on designing tunable extraction processes as a function of chemistry, thermodynamics, and kinetics Insights gained from experiments or theory/computation on controllable factors limiting critical mineral speciation
