Carbohydrates in the form of oligosaccharides and glycoconjugates, e.g. glycoproteins and glycolipids, are playing key roles in various cellular events, including cell-cell communication, adhesion, infection, immunity and so on. The advances of the methods and strategies in chemical synthesis have enabled complex oligosaccharides and glycoconjugates to be readily constructed, which provide the necessary materials and useful chemical tools to study their glycobiology. Professor Raymond Lemieux (1920-2000) has paved the way for the modern carbohydrate chemistry to evolve. His contributions include the discovery of the anomeric effect, development of general methodologies for the synthesis of saccharides, monumental studies on carbohydrate-protein recognition and more. The aim of this symposium in memory of Raymond Lemieux for his 100 year-old birthday is to bring together researchers to share information on updated technological development for the advancements in glycochemistry, and also for early career scientists to hare scientific discussions with experts. This symposium will enhance the communications and grow the community.
