Triazolones are frequently encountered in active pharmaceutical ingredients such as the antifungal drugs posaconazole and itraconazole. Additionally, these heterocyclic scaffolds are part of many agrochemicals, for example, triazolone herbicides.

Therefore, finding new synthetic methods that allow access to formerly unknown substitution patterns or substituents could be of benefit to several areas of chemistry.

Reccently, the Bolliger group has developed a simple procedure to access previously unknown N-alkenyl triazolones in two steps via a rearrangement reaction. In this presentation we will share the results of our mechanistic studies in which we investigated several potential reaction mechanisms leading to our desired product.
