Session: Successful Student Chapters:

The American Chemical Society student chapter at the University of Puerto Rico – Río Piedras campus (ACS UPR-RP) has always had a strong commitment with its members and their professional development and 2020 would not be an exception. On the verge of new programs for distant communication, our chapter adapted and overcame the difficulties and barriers brought by the novel coronavirus. The pandemic was not a reason not to carry out the activities for which this chapter stands out, and year after year impacts more communities and individuals through chemistry. Creative and ingenious activities were put in motion to ensure to impact lives through chemistry. Workshops, discussions, and various activities were held to capture the attention of members and promote professional growth. Also, orientations from different graduate schools, internships, and university programs were offered. Likewise, the impact on communities and schools was maintained in an innovative way by a virtual workshop of demonstrations through videos developed by the chapter members with thorough explanations and also by virtual demonstrations shows “The Magic of Chemistry”. The virtual content that has been generated this year represents educational resources, valuable for future events and trainings. Moreover, since last summer we have worked tirelessly in partnership with other organizations to help distribute food to the neediest communities. These and other activities will be elaborated in this presentation.
