Dr. Imke Schroeder is a Research Project Manager at the University of California Center for Laboratory Safety since 2012. She is also an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics (MIMG) at UCLA since 2001. Imke received her Ph.D. in microbiology and biochemistry from the University of Marburg, Germany, and performed her postdoctoral training in microbial genetics at UCLA. She serves on the Editorial Board of ACS Chemical Health & Safety since 2019. Imke is the administrative liaison for the Safety Training Consortium, a non-profit organization consisting of universities and colleges across the United States to develop high-quality, peer-reviewed, and engaging online safety courses to benefit researchers' safety in the lab. Imke manages several subject matter expert teams in addition to serving as a subject matter expert for course development. Imke conducts research on laboratory safety, accident analysis, identification of leading factors for accidents and unsafe behaviors, and laboratory safety training. She also has extensive expertise in diverse areas of microbiology including research on extremophiles and pathogens. She is an expert in the risk assessment associated with each agent and process. She is also well trained in BSL-3 best practices. Recent projects include organizing the Laboratory Safety Workshop events in 2016, 2018, and 2021, investigating a hydrogen/oxygen explosion at the University of Hawaii in 2016 as well as other accident investigations in 2016 and 2020 and conducting safety culture surveys at universities in 2017, 2018 and 2021.
