Propolis is one of the many products extracted by honeybees, and has gained popularity recently due to publications of its health benefits. It has been shown to be anti-oxidative, anti-carcinogenic, and anti-inflammatory to name a few. The main focus of this research has been on Brazilian Propolis, while Propolis from other countries have been neglected. My research is to focus on American Propolis and determine the phenolic content, along with identifying the major flavonoids inside of it through Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry. Future work for the project includes analyzing trials from Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry and analyzing effects of specific compounds on a model cell membrane.
