Electrochemical conversion of CO2 and CO into value-added fuels and chemicals represents a promising strategy for carbon utilization and the sustainable interconversion of renewable energy into chemical bonds. Recent breakthroughs have underscored the pivotal role of the local chemical environmentoften referred to as the catalyst microenvironmentin dictating the selectivity, activity, and stability of CO2 and CO electroreduction processes. Simultaneously, advancements in electrochemical system design, including electrocatalysis, device architecture, and process engineering, are crucial for scaling these approaches toward industrial application, and these new approaches must implicitly or explicitly manage the local microenvironment. This symposium aims to unite researchers, industry professionals, and academics to discuss the latest developments in: Microenvironment Control: Advances in understanding and tuning the catalyst microenvironment to enhance performance metrics such as selectivity and activity in CO2 and CO conversion. Advanced Electrocatalysts: Designing innovative electrocatalysts and electrode materials that improve efficiency and product yields. Electrochemical Device Design: Developing cutting-edge electrochemical cells and reactors that optimize reaction conditions and scalability. Process and System Engineering: Implementing strategies for scaling up electrochemical CO2 and CO conversion processes, including integration with existing industrial systems. By bridging fundamental research with practical engineering solutions, the symposium explores the latest developments toward addressing the challenges of achieving industrially relevant performance and long-term stability in electrochemical CO2 and CO conversion technologies. Attendees will be able to share perspectives on the future landscape for controlling the microenvironment within scalable systems for sustainable carbon utilization.
