MXenes are two-dimensional carbides and nitrides with rich surface chemistry. They have the general formula M???X?T?, where M represents an early transition metal, X is carbon and/or nitrogen, and T denotes surface terminations like -OH, -O, or -F. These materials are usually derived from MAX phases, which have the structure M???AX?, by chemically etching out the A layer (typically aluminum or silicon). The resulting structure consists of layers of transition metal and carbon or nitrogen atoms, creating a material that combines high electrical conductivity, hydrophilicity, and mechanical strength. The surface chemistry of MXenes can be finely tuned by altering the surface terminations, allowing for a wide range of customizable properties. Due to their unique characteristics, MXenes have shown promise in various applications, including energy storage, electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, water purification, sensors, and catalysis. However, challenges such as stability in the presence of water and oxygen, and the scalability of their production, remain. Despite these challenges, ongoing research is focused on enhancing their stability and exploring new MXene compositions, making them a versatile and promising material for future technological advancements. This symposium is aimed at bringing together researchers working on the various aspects of MXenes to highlight recent progress and discuss challenges and opportunities in advancing chemistry of MXenes.
