The Jordan River is a principal source of groundwater along Utah’s Wasatch front. Treated wastewater is discharged by multiple facilities into its source, Utah Lake, and into the river itself at several locations before it drains into the Great Salt Lake. The potential contamination of the river due to unmonitored pollution or improperly regulated water treatment processes is a concern. The ability of available instrumentation to detect the trace presence of nicotine in river water was investigated. Methodology was revised to increase nicotine retention in multiple calibration standards, and the updated procedure was used to analyze samples of water from three locations in three trials along the Jordan River; the primary watershed for the Salt Lake Valley.
