The synthetic cannabinoids can be further categorized based on their relationship to naturally occurring cannabinoids. Some are designed to replicate the structure and function of cannabinoids found in nature, such as THC or CBD, while others are entirely novel, with no natural counterpart. These novel synthetic cannabinoids may exhibit unique pharmacological effects, posing distinct challenges for research, therapeutic use, and regulation.

As these compounds gain prominence in research, medicine, and industry, a shared and precise nomenclature becomes essential.
