Charged polymers introduce long-range electrostatic forces that can influence assembly at the nanoscale, and by extension, ion mobility. In this session, research will be presented related to how charged polymers, polyelectrolytes, gels, and other soft materials expand the search space for nanostructures with targeted morphology and functionality. In addition to electrostatic screening in solution and the formation of electrochemical double layers at surfaces and interfaces, long-range intermolecular interactions, including hydrogen bonding, specific ion effects, and charge cohesion and ordering can result in the formation of nanostructures that are inaccessible to neutral materials. In addition to device fabrication and other applications, the fundamental physics governing assembly of charged soft materials capable of learning and memory will be discussed.
