Dr Chao Chen

Associate Professor, Tsinghua Univerisity

Dr Chao Chen is an associate professor in division of drinking water Safety, school of environment, Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. He also acts as the Director of Research Center for Environmental Risk and Emergency in Research Institute for Environmental Innovation (Suzhou), Tsinghua. He got the Ph. D. of civil engineering in Tsinghua University 2005. He joined Tsinghua University at 2007 and got promoted to be an associate professor at 2010. His research is mainly focused on the following field: (1) Optimization of disinfection process and disinfection by-products control; (2) Emergency response for drinking water treatment plants to fight against chemical spills; (3) Water quality problem in distribution system and control.

He has directed five national projects as PI since 2007. He also devoted himself into several severe emergency response practices in China, including the odorous water problem in the Taihu Lake, Wuxi city in 2007, the emergency response for environmental safety assessment and water supply in the Wenchuan Earthquake affected area in 2008, the Cadmium contamination accident in the Longjiang River in 2012 and the Cyanide spill in the explosion accident in Tianjin in 2015. Dr Chen has published over 80 peer-reviewed English papers in international journals, over 100 peer-reviewed Chinese papers and 10 books in Chinese and in English. He also won about 20 granted patents in China and guided 8 construction projects for water supply. He is a member of International Water Association and a member of American Chemistry Society. He has been selected as the strategic council member of IWA, the chairman of specialist group of disinfection of IWA, a management committee member of specialist group of aquatic off-flavor of IWA.
