Session: Undergraduate Research Posters: Polymer Chemistry:

The intent of this research was to investigate practical applications of cross-linked polymers synthesized through free-radical polymerization reactions of ionic liquid monomers, which were synthesized through neutralization reactions of Bronsted acids and bases. IR and HNMR spectra were taken during the reaction to determine when it would reach completion. Once the reaction reached completion, the products were analyzed through IR and NMR spectroscopy to verify that ionic liquid monomers were successfully synthesized. These ionic liquid monomers were then used to synthesize several polymers made with varying initiator concentrations. The polymerization reaction created tacky polymers that were tested for bacterial toxicity and adhesive properties; these tests were performed to assess progress toward the goal of creating environmentally-friendly adhesives.
