Students’ understanding of the location and function of electron density in organic reactions has been measured using the Nucleophile and Electrophile Concept Inventory (NECI). The inventory was developed by conducting and evaluating data from semi-structured interviews with eleven second-semester organic chemistry students. Data analysis revealed that students focus on structure (charges and lone pairs) over function (donating and accepting electrons) for both nucleophiles and electrophiles. The 23-item NECI was pilot-tested with organic chemistry students at two different institutions. Preliminary findings related to the Nucleophile and Electrophile Concept Inventory will be presented.
