Originally from Michigan, I left the Mitten for the Big Apple to study forensic science. After a brief but intense career as a criminalist using DNA technology to aid in criminal investigations and missing persons cases, I left the Office of Chief Medical Examiner to devote my energy to teaching organic chemistry. My students helped me realize my passion for natural products chemistry.
I am a fifth-year Ph.D. candidate in Dr. Akira Kawamura's laboratory at Hunter College. We are natural products chemistry researchers who decipher the chemical language from plant and insect microbiomes.
When I met Dr. Kawamura, he was embarking on a microbial molecular discovery project which piqued my interest.
Using fermentation and microbes as renewable sources of molecules is very interesting to me. There's so much to explore.
In addition to my research, I teach organic chemistry and lead long-term undergraduate research projects. Outside the lab, I'm a landscape and wedding photographer.
